On March 16th, Dallas Makes took place at the Dallas Retirement Village. Student ambassadors from LaCreole Middle School engaged with residents and their families and the community in a morning filled with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) activities, conversation and a lot of fun!

This Dallas Makes is the first event of its kind and is a part of the Innovate Dallas project designed to connect our schools in Dallas with our community. Student ambassadors from LaCreole Middle School led the Dallas Retirement Village Community in activities through a shared technology program called “Robot Crazy!” Many residents and their families joined in on the fun and many others stopped by to check out all the buzz. Our Robot Crazy event included a robotics demonstration, programming Spheros (spherical robots capable of rolling around under the control of a smartphone or tablet) as well as manipulating drones. Participants even had a chance to try their hand at a design challenge called Gladiator which involved mini robots and a whole lot of craft supplies in a friendly competition of balloon popping fun! Students and participants learned from each other throughout the morning which was perhaps the greatest success of all, bringing to light the joy of learning!  A student ambassador, Terrin Nativitad said, “It was the most fun I’ve ever had interacting with our older generation, it was a great day!”

While the event showed off our students’ abilities to problem solve, think creatively, collaborate, and communicate with others, the event provided a great and unique interaction between multiple generations. Julia Nelson, another student ambassador stated, “I feel more connected to the community because of this opportunity.”

Our first Dallas Makes was a huge success. Future events are being planned and our hope is to include other industry partners to both highlight the work of our students as well as our promote our business community’s commitment to developing authentic partnerships with our schools.
